We also use the newly created “Redi-set cement” in the shotcreting process. Ordinarily, newly applied cement with no droppings can support itself without inclining or peeling off.
It can be expected that materials with no slump will be able to stand on its own with no danger of sagging or peeling off.
On the other hand, shotcrete is a new development based on the same principle as guniting but producing walls of greater thickness with the addition of small coarse aggregates. There are very subtle differences between shortcreting and guniting. For example, shortcrete is newly introduced, while gunite was introduced to the industry around the early 1900s.
The dry-mix process is done this way:
(a) Cement and sand are thoroughly blended.
(b) The cement/sand mixture is put in a special air-pressurized mechanical feeder called “gun.”
(c) The blend is measured and placed in the conveyance hose by a feed wheel or distributor.
(d) This material is pushed by compressed air through the conveyance hose to a special nozzle. The nozzle is placed inside with a perforated manifold through which water is passed and blended with the sand/cement jet.
(e) The wet mortar is ejected at high pressure from the spout onto the surface to be gunited.
The Wet-Mix Process
In the wet-mix process, the concrete is mixed with water just like in normal cement mixing. It is then placed in the transport pipeline to the nozzle, where it is propelled by compressed air at high pressure into the surface.
The wet-mix process has generally been cast aside in favor of the dry-mix process, because the latter produces much better results. The dry-mix technique can either use low velocity or high velocity, depending on the compaction needed for the project. Smaller nozzles are used to achieve higher velocity. The nozzle velocity can reach up to 432 kilometers per hour. Meanwhile, the low-velocity gunite is produced using a large diameter hose. The compunction, in this case, is not that high.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Dry and Wet Process
Although more accurate control of the water/cement mixture can be done through the wet process, the fact that the mixture is kept exceedingly low in the dry process counteracts the objection on the lack of precise control.
The dry process is an ideal choice when you are using light-weight aggregate. Then again, if you are using wet sand, the procedure will not be as effective because there are sensitivities it just cannot handle.
The lower water/cement proportion in the dry process is believed to be responsible for the lesser creep and stronger strength of the concrete made this way compared to the concrete delivered through the wet process. However, air-carrying agents can be used to enhance the solidness of concrete delivered through the wet process. Admixtures, for the most part, can be used more conveniently with the wet process, with the exception of the accelerators.
